her second first day

After reading a book last night about the first day of school, I asked her if she was nervous. "No. Last year I was. But this year I know what to expect and I have friends and I know the teachers," she said. She woke up early today, at 6:15, and couldn't fall back to sleep. She was happy and excited. When we arrived at school, she waved at several people (little and big), gave her kindergarten teacher a hug, and then settled into her new classroom. She gave me a kiss goodbye and got to work, without so much as a glance up when I said goodbye for the second time. She was ready to be there, and it felt so much better this time around.

Kindergarten Graduation

When Sarah started kindergarten, I was uncertain. She would no longer spend most of the day at home with me, but instead she would be at school, with someone else. The year is over, and I'm glad to say that I ended the year in a much better place than where I started. Sarah had a good year and a great teacher - she's reading, writing, and (during lunch today) counting to 100 by 2s. And that's only the academic part. She gleefully spots Grady Brown colors (blue and yellow) everywhere and proudly states to whomever is willing to listen, "I go to the #1 school in America".

The end-of-year celebration was too cute, and, thanks to her teacher's amazing ability to get so much done, we have a sweet memory book to help us look back on the year.

a matter of time

There may be little evidence of it here, but I am blogging. The blogs just happen to be for my explorations in literacy course and include topics like "my thoughts on transactional/reader response theory" and "what I plan to do for my next lesson". (I'd rather be writing about what fun we're having at home, especially after it finally rained. It felt like a big moment and we had a good wet time, as you can see!) As most of you know, I started this coursework with reservation, and although I still have many unanswered questions, I'm enjoying thinking about the process of reading, and the teaching of it.

As for this blog, I'll do my best to at least post some photos here soon . . .
